THE CHARTER OF ROAD TRAFFIC VICTIMS’ RIGHTS WAS CREATED TO HELP VICTIMS, SO WERE WE – MIBI

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) has said the Charter of Road Traffic Victims’ Rights was created to help victims, and so were they. They were speaking as they became the first organisation in Ireland to be recognised as an official supporters of the Charter.
The Charter of Road Traffic Victims’ Rights aims help all those impacted by road traffic accidents and to serve as a code of conduct for those involved in the provision of compensation to those victims. It was developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Institute for European Traffic Law (IETL) and COB (Council of Bureaux), inspired by the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Supporters of the Charter include insurance providers, Compensation Bodies, Guarantee Funds, Green Card Bureaux, claims handling offices and brokers from across the EU and throughout the Green Card system area.
The MIBI is a not for profit organisation that was established to compensate the victims of road traffic accidents caused by uninsured or unidentified vehicles. It was founded in 1955, following an agreement between the Irish government and the companies underwriting motor insurance in Ireland. It acts as the Green Card Bureau, Compensation Body, Guarantee Fund and Information Centre for the Republic of Ireland. Over the course of the 70+ years it has operated, it has paid out compensation to victims estimated to represent over €2 billion at today’s values.
“In the MIBI, one of our mottos is “MIBI Helps”,” said David Fitzgerald, CEO of the MIBI. “The entire purpose of the MIBI is to help victims of road traffic accidents caused by uninsured or unidentified vehicles. That is what we were set up to do and that is what we strive to deliver on a daily basis. We have always sought to treat genuine victims with care and compassion and we are proud of the assistance we have been able to provide over the years.
“The Charter of Road Traffic Victims’ Rights was created to help victims. It is exists to help, just as we do. It is an internationally recognised symbol of care, which carries meaning for victims at home and abroad. The principles behind the Charter represent positive ideals which signpost to victims that they will be treated fairly.
“We are honoured to be associated with the Charter. It is becoming an international quality mark of care for the industry. By becoming a supporter we are sending a signal to genuine victims that we are here to help, a signal we hope will be quickly picked up by those who need us, when they need us,” Mr. Fitzgerald concluded.
