General:
MIBI was designated, under the 4th EU Motor Insurance Directive, as Motor Insurance Information Centre of Ireland (MIICI) by the Minister for Transport in 2003. This provided that persons involved in an accident in another EC Member State may apply to MIICI who will establish the identity of the insurer of the alleged offending vehicle and supply, to the victim, the details of that insurers’ Claims Representative in Ireland who will handle the claim on behalf of their principal.
The 5th EU Motor Insurance Directive, which came into force in 2008, extended the role of MIICI to include all accidents which have occurred in the EC, including Ireland.
If you have been involved in an accident in Ireland or in another EC Member State and wish to establish the identity of the insurer of the responsible vehicle, click here and supply the following information:
· Date of Accident
· Registration number of the alleged offending vehicle
· Country of Accident
· Your own contact details
If your enquiry relates to an accident in another Member State MIICI will contact the Information Centre in the State where the responsible vehicle is registered to obtain details of insurance. That Information Centre will establish the identity of the insurer or alternatively advise if the vehicle was uninsured and in such cases provide details of the registered owner of the vehicle. Where the vehicle is insured details of the insurers’ Claims Representative in Ireland are also provided.
If your enquiry relates to an accident in this country MIICI will establish the identity of the Irish insurer or alternatively advise if the vehicle was uninsured.
If you are visiting this country from another Member State and are involved in a motor accident here enquiries should be submitted to your local Information Centre in your country of residence.
If you are not resident in Ireland and have been involved in an accident either in your home country or elsewhere you must contact your local Information Centre or Green Card Bureau, whichever is appropriate, who will deal with your enquiry.
